Heat treatment

Heat treatment is a process used in metal processing to treat workpieces by heating and cooling them in a controlled manner in order to specifically change the technological material properties. It is one of the most important production steps in the finishing of components. In heat treatment, a distinction is made between processes that cause a structural transformation, reduce stresses or change the surface properties.

The choice of reaction and protective gases used during heat treatment is of particular importance. Especially when producing functional and wear layers, the gas composition in the furnace atmosphere in combination with the process temperature plays a decisive role for the surface properties to be produced. However, it is not only the heating of metals that changes the microstructure; low-temperature treatment also changes the material properties and is often added after the actual heat treatment.
